wHoops!

Here is a (sorry, not very good) picture of one of the new cycle hoops being trialled in the Mill Road area. This is the first time this new kind of cycle parking has been used outside London, and I’d be glad to know what you think of it.

There are hoops attached to road signage poles in Covent Garden, Willis Road, Collier Road and Guest Road. They take up very little space and are aimed to increase secure cycle parking provision in streets where there isn’t much room for conventional cycle racks. They are also much cheaper to install.

If you can think of a place in your street which would benefit from one of these hoops, do let me know. The City and Councty councils’ Cycling Demonstration Town project has purchased a number of them for use around the city.

I think the hoops are a great idea! Any means of creating more places that I can secure my bike safely is welcomed by me. I don’t know if it is just me, but I get the feeling that bike racks are becoming busier and busier (especially at the weekend) and I find it increasingly difficult to get a space now. One area of Cambridge I think the bike hoops could be useful (if there is the space) is along Magdeline Street down into Bridge Street and Sidney Street as I know there are always loads of bikes parked around this area and it’s difficult to find a space. As long as using them doesn’t mean the pavement is clogged with bikes I think residents will be happy to see them around Cambridge.
