Nichola Harrison

Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Petersfield, Cambridge

Post Office closure announcement

The government’s Post Office closure programme has identified three Post Offices within Cambridge and another 20 throughout Cambridgeshire. The three are 33 Regent Street, 2a Trumpington Street and the St Johns Post Office, Hills Road (south of the railway bridge).

Petersfield’s Post Offices in Mill Road and Hills Road are safe, which is a relief for our local community. However, in common with Lib Dem colleagues all over the County, Nichola is worried about the effects of the closures especially for less mobile people such as the elderly. The Lib Dems have created the Save Cambs Post Offices website (see link on the left) which carries information and a petition.

The City Council will be holding a public meeting about the closures at the Guildhall, at 7pm on Tuesday 22nd July.

    this should help your campaign

Having monitored post office closures it is important that campaigners make the right choice of how to save their post office, once the public consultation begins there is only a small chance, less than 5% to get your branch reprieved, Post Office Ltd assume they have all the information they need to have made this decision to close these branches, only if you prove they have missed importantant social information in their pre consultation period with MP’s, Local Councils, the Post Masters, Unions and other stakeholders, this is why you must write individually explaining what impact this closure will have on you, how will you get to the alternative branches suggested, how long will the return journey take, what is the terrain like, how frequent are the bus services, how long would the return journey take, is it too far for you to walk to and from the bus stops, are their bus shelters, what will you be able to do whilst there, are there adequate retail outlets close by the alternative, to attract you there? etc look at the Branch Access Report, is it accurate, many have errors, overstatements, journey times do not include walking time to and from bus stops, is the bus frequency correct, is the mileage accurate? for help how to campaign effectively, goto:-

see how to analyse your Branch Access Report,
also look at Local Campaigns/Regional Data Analysis whilst on the website, don’t delay get people to write urgently, tell you own personal story, do not be embarrassed or ashamed, do not keep quiet, write now, otherwise Post Office Ltd will close your branch believing they have taken all circumstances into account.
